As you know, the week of 8-12 October 2018 in Belarus was dedicated to the energy industry. A number of milestone events dealt with energy supply issues, prospects of the energy industry, and opportunities for international cooperation in this area. The Energy Week opened on 8 October with the VIth German-Belarusian Energy Forum and was continued by the XXIIIrd Belarusian Energy and Environment Forum and the Energy Expo from 9-12 October.
We also devoted our October Club Evening to energy issues, in particular to the status and prospects of renewable energy in Belarus in the context of the implementation of CIA-2030 and the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The topic was all the more begging for the agenda as our Club member Jürgen Schenk, Science and Technology Consultant at Sakharov International State Environmental University and also a CIM expert, has an accomplished expert on these issues who has agreed to take on the role of referent for the evening.
Mr. Schenk started his presentation with a video that touched on the basics of CIM 2030 and defined green and sustainable energy issues in the context of the CIM agenda. He then discussed the current state of energy supply in Belarus and presented the prospects of renewable energy development in the country. During the presentation, the audience was able to broaden their understanding of the development of this industry in Belarus. In doing so, many well-known facts - including contrary trends in connection with the construction of a nuclear power plant - were both clarified and examined from a new perspective through the use of detailed statistical information. Of course, the development of the country's energy supply system was given a special place. Concerning renewable energy, various aspects were touched upon and discussed, including economic efficiency, environmental awareness, and the necessary political will to transform the energy sector.
Mr. Schenk concluded his presentation by introducing the concept of an energy supply based exclusively on renewable energy sources, namely in the form of another video clip. The film also addressed the audience with the idea that "green energy" does not only mean energy production from renewable energy sources, but also the environmentally conscious use of this energy, be it through the introduction of the concept of "smart things" or electric transport.
Thus, the theme of the evening combined pragmatic questions relating to investment opportunities in the renewable energy sector in Belarus with medium- and long-term considerations for the development of the energy supply system around the world in the near future. This fruitful combination of different aspects and topics for conversation contributed to the interesting networking that followed in the traditional buffet.
